What Is Stress And Anxiety? | Access Possibilities

Stress is the body’s response to difficult, pressured, or worrisome circumstances. Stress can cause both physical and emotional tension. Symptoms of stress include headaches, muscle soreness, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness, anxiety and irritability.

Anxiety is the body’s way of preparing itself to deal with a threat or to deal with future stressful events. This is often referred to as the Fight or Flight Response. While this response is normal and happens as part of the body’s natural response to stress, this response can also happen at inappropriate times or too frequently, as in the case of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety can include both physical and mental symptoms such as fear, nervousness, nausea, sweating, increased blood pressure and heart rate, feelings of apprehension or dread, difficulty concentrating, irritability, restlessness, panic attacks and many others.

Many of the symptoms mentioned above can escalate into chronic health conditions and become more difficult to deal with. Anxiety can often lead to depression. And the reverse is also true, depression can lead to anxiety.

Stress and anxiety can have a debilitating effect on your physical, mental and spiritual health. It's pretty much impossible to achieve or maintain holistic health (balance of body, mind and spirit) when you are stressed out or anxious about things such as your health, body, family, relationships, money, work, career or business.
